Handy Hunters

Handy Hunters

question

Handy classes – Describe a round with a high mark for handiness.  What attributes make a good handy hunter?

All A rated sections at A and AA rated horse shows (except Green Pony) must offer a Handy Hunter over fences class as part of the division.  Obstacles in a handy hunter class often simulate those found in hunting country.  The course can include a hand gallop to a jump, rollback turns, a fence at the end (width) of the arena, trotting an obstacle or even opening a gate while mounted.  Judges place emphasis on promptness, tight turns.  Handiness is defined as time and ground saving movement without adversely affecting performance or style.

The judges explain their objectives when judging a handy hunter class.
